I'm a huge fan of the Final Destination series. They aren't Oscarcontenders, but they are certainly quite entertaining. However, afterhearing a lot of negative feedback on the 4th FD, I decided not towatch it and hung my head in disappointment. I genuinely thought myfavorite deadly franchise had finally bit the dust itself, and in a badway. But when I heard about this fifth and final Final Destination, Idecided to give it one more chance. Because hey, I hadn't been to thetheater in awhile and if it sucked I'd at least have a good laugh. But,I am very happy to report that I was pleasantly surprised by FinalDestination 5.

The story, as other reviewers have mentioned, really sets FD5 up togood prospects. It feels a lot more like the first FD, much darkerwithout being too complex. I honestly liked the 2nd and 3rd ones a lot,but they were missing the creepy factor that the first installment had. This fifth episode really brings it back. The characters aresurprisingly believable. Granted, you have the gratuitous hot chick andladies man, but the characters never feel contrived or forced. Kudos tothe actors for keeping this from being a $5-bin campy horror film.

The effects, even in 2D, were just as I think a film's effects shouldbe: realistic enough to avoid the fake-factor, but not so excessivethat they drown out everything else in the film. Yes, one could arguethat these movies are all about death, but what always made themdifferent for me from other horrors was the focus on build-up. The FDfranchise has it's fans trained to watch for every little thing in ascene that could cause someone's demise until your skin crawls--and FD5gives the audience this "detective" feeling perfectly.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much out of this movie. However, fromthe very beginning, I was impressed. A few points of warning: it isvery graphic, but anyone who has seen any of the other FD films shouldknow that already. Also, you will not enjoy this film as much if youhaven't watched at least the 1st FD, if not the 2nd and 3rd as well. When you factor in the story and characters, the death and mayhem we'veall come to love, and one of the best plot twists I've seen this year,FD5 is very worth watching. Go on, have some fun.

But you all just be careful, now. ;)
FINAL DESTINATION / (2000) ***

Starring: Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith, Chad E. Donella, AmandaDetmer, and Kristen Cloke. Directed by James Wong. Written by Jeffrey Reddick, Glen Morgan and JamesWong. Running time: 90 minutes. Rated R (for terror violence and language).

I think it is safe to say every individual has different feelings aboutdeath. Some fear it. Others deny it. Most are weary in some way regardingdecease. "Final Destination" is a perfect thriller for skeptics, detailingseven confused individuals who accidentally escape demise, discovering theimpossibility of defrauding their destined time. The film's atmosphereprovokes cringe through a presumably omnipresent force stalking thecharacters, producing audience participation whether the Grim Reaper isfootsteps away from us all.

Devon Sawa ("Idle Hands," "Wild America") is a high school senior namedAlex Browning. He and his French class are at an airport flying to Paris fora field trip with their teacher, Ms. Lewton (Kristen Cloke). Once on theplane Alex begins to experience a dream-like vision of the jet exploding inmidair killing all of its passengers. As the plane is about to descend, Alexnotices his illusion gradually comes to life. This leaves him no choice butto cause a small riot leaving him and six other passengers thrown off theflight.

Students Carter (Kerr Smith), the ignorant jerk and girlfriend Terry (AmandaDetmer), Alex's best friend, Tod (Chad E. Donella), other peers Billy (SeannWilliam Scott), Clear (Ali Larter), Ms. Lewton and Alex watch from theairport as their late flight bursts into flames within minutes aftertakeoff-leaving these characters suspiciously confused about fate.

The film wastes no time depicting its setup. The rushed opening leads tolack of character development. Whereas the character's personalities areclear, we feel little remorse for many of them. The dramatic premise ishorrific and revealing, playing like an extended "The X Files" episodewithout paranormal detectives. "Final Destination" is creative and full ofvariety; we witness the plane crash from two different perspectives, as apassenger and an observer.

Days after the crash, the survivors begin to die in unusual manners-almostas if a curse of death was placed on them for cheating demise. Alex digsdeeper and discovers his companions are being killed by strange coincidencesin the order they would have died from the explosion on the flight. Indesperation, he attempts to contradict death for everyone remaining whileunder superstition of two disillusioned law enforcers.

There are a few overlooked characters in "Final Destination," mostly adultswho seem to have an IQ score in the mid-nineties. The teenager's parents areleft out most of the story. There is also a briefly creepy appearance by amortician but is short-circuited by the plot. He is one of the manycharacters who end up explaining a lot of the plot to us.

Most recent teen horror romps feature a madman chasing characters withsharp objects. "Final Destination" is too smart to fall in that cliché,however. It has a punctual reason for inhabiting teens: these are youngpeople full of energy and life, all the more reason for them to fight death.

The film, written by Jeffrey Reddick, Glen Morgan and director James Wong, never explains why the Alex character has visions of upcoming disasters. Theidea makes for an intriguing story, but there are no interesting subplots orside characters here. Therefore without being backed up by supportingstories the filmmakers must thoroughly justify the character's reason forbeing. Wong seems to overlook Alex's illusions, a concept holding the entiremovie together.

Although "Final Destination" provides many edge-of-your-seat surprises andtension, the film likes to poke fun at many of its scenes. Like the averageteenage thriller, the movie takes itself seriously about three quarters ofthe time-leaving the last quarter as comic relief. Certainly having nothingagainst comedic sequences in horror flicks, I just prefer a movie true toits genre. Even though "Final Destination" is nowhere near perfect, it isthe truest film to the teen slasher gender along time.

"Final Destination" is brought to you by New Line Cinema.
